Christianity and Longhill Estate in 1980s

These are the raw figures from the study of Church and people in Longhill Estate carried out in 1986 after the Church of England made an approach to me and I contacted my tutor, Peter Forster, and he set up a Steering Committee. The aim of the study for us was sociological (belief and practice on the council estate) and for them background information for an Urban Mission Experiment, in effect bringing Anglo-Catholic charismatic church authority to a house church situation. The council estate was not one of the most deprived and had origins in the 1950's with more traditional semi-detached and terraced architecture and street plans than the council estates that were to follow.

These figures were published in papers and then discussed in Contemporary Mainstream Religion edited by Peter Forster (1985) published in Aldershot by Avebury. Remember that people no matter how much we said we were NOT from the churches may have thought that we were after church like answers and had a tendency to give us answers they thought we wanted to hear. How did we know this? Because the churches would have been packed if we believed the figures as given. For such analysis, please read the book (!) or contact me.
