The Research Officer
We wish to recruit suitably qualified and motivated staff to work on its research projects and contribute to the wider work and development of the Department and Foundation. The work to be undertaken by successful candidate will be discussed on appointment, but is likely to include some of the following activities:

visiting or telephoning schools to interview teachers, pupils, parents, governors
visiting or telephoning training providers and employers to interview recruitment and training managers
liaising with and interviewing LA staff and staff in agencies which cover the Five Outcomes for Children
developing questionnaires and interview schedules
analysing the results of questionnaires or interview data
carrying out reviews of research literature
writing reports for clients
participating in presentations and attending conferences
developing research proposals.

The successful applicant will take on specific areas of responsibility in consultation with their line manager and the Project Leader(s) with whom they work. Areas of responsibility will grow as the individual’s expertise and interests develop, and the Department and Foundation actively support the career development of staff through providing clear career routes, training, appraisal and personal encouragement.

We are keen to hear from those with an educational or social science research background, who have at least a good first degree, and a working knowledge of, and keen interest in, the British educational and training system. Candidates should possess good analytical skills, be able to write clearly and succinctly for a variety of audiences, have good inter-personal skills, enjoy working in a team environment, and show evidence of the ability to work to deadlines.

Candidates are invited to indicate on the application form any particular areas of research expertise or interest. One of the criteria to be used in the appointment to this post will be the extent to which the candidates’ knowledge, skills and experience complement those held by other members of the Department.

This post is full-time, available immediately and permanent after a one-year probationary period. The post is based in York and may involve considerable travel throughout England and the rest of the UK. The occasional overnight stay may be necessary.
