Three Trees Grouping (Two Paintings)

Three Women at Three Trees near Thixendale was completed on 11th August 2020 on an approximately 30 inches by 24 inches (762 mm by 610 mm) canvas. It is an acrylics painting. The left hand model was photogaphed by a group of us in 1992 and nude later in 1993 by me, and the right hand model was photographed by me nude in 1993. The centre model sent her photographs to me electronically in correspondence. Three Trees was painted by David Hockney in 2007, one of a number depicting the seasons and, in this case, somewhat influenced by computer graphics as methodology, style and in their colours. The image at 1600 by 1200 pixels is shown at 37.5%.

This is an updated drawing to improve an arm. This is the largest canvas I have used for some time - 610 mm by 762 mm, or about 24 by 30 inches. The drawing, using pencil, water, fibre tipped pens and pastel highlighters had in mind my version of David Hockney's Three Trees. I can see why Hockney's trees are highly stylised, inspired as they are by computer graphic art and methods then transferred to painting. Once again, when it comes to art that people negatively criticise, whether abstract or responding to computer graphics, we see that there is a lot more to it than at first meets the eye - a lot of thought and much careful and skillful application. This was a challenging drawing especially on a bigger canvas. Originally I thought of one model on a car, and this would not work, nor one model alone (except on a smaller canvas). This version of three trees with three models simply came about to occupy and use space. Two models left too much unused space. The image is 1600 by 1200 pixels and displayed reduced (37.5%).

This shows progress made during some of the daylight hours of 7th August 2020 on the Three Trees painting on the 610 mm by 762 mm canvas. I had yet to paint in the trunks and the branches of the trees, and little detail had been added anywhere. The paints are acrylic with the odd touch of brushed in correction fluid. Slightly different green mixes separated one tree from another. The image at 1600 by 1200 pixels is shown at 37.5%.

This was not quite complete because I needed more details added to the trees and maybe elsewhere. The image is 1000 by 1200 pixels and displayed reduced (37.5%).

Woman Undressing In Front of Two Trees was completed on 16th August 2020. It is on a 30 by 40 cm canvas. The effect of overcoming blue as a drawing colour is to darken the picture. The background is again that of Three Trees near Thixendale, or rather two of them, in a stylised fashion. (Note: this was photographed in dull light under rainy clouds - although these colours are fairly accurate right across the range.). The image is 950 by 1200 pixels and displayed reduced (50%).

I started using an orange fibre tipped pen, but the drawing went awry. So I used blue to override it. I used water and nail varnish remover to try and reduce down both orange and blue bad lines, and thus it became a blue wash across the drawing. I also used two brands of correction fluid to knock out bad lines. The image is 950 by 1200 pixels and displayed reduced (50%).
